This weekend coming up is Father’s Day Weekend and we know you want to do something special with the kids. What better way then to have your little ones rock out to the music of Grateful Dead.
The Playhouse will host special concerts at 25 venues in 23 cities across the nation on June 15-16.
Special guests will join the Playhouse around the country for the celebration, including members of Barton Hills Choir and David Gans (Gallagher Way, Chicago), Catfish John (Brooklyn Bowl, Las Vegas), Franklin Turnpike (Industry City, Brooklyn), Stella Blues Band (Garcia’s, Port Chester), Mr. Blotto (Thalia Hall, Chicago), Three Days in the Saddle (Boulder Theater, Boulder), Bearly Dead (The Sinclair, Boston), Steal Your Peach (Ardmore Music Hall, Philadelphia), Sunshine Becker of JGB (UC Theatre, Berkeley), Deadikates (Brooklyn Bowl, NY), Crazy Fingers (Funky Biscuit, South Florida) and Better Off Dead (Gypsy Sally’s, Washington D.C.).
The Rock and RollPlayhouse is a family concert series that allows kids to “move, play and sing while listening to works from the classic-rock canon” (NY Times). Created by entrepreneur and owner of The Capitol Theatre and co-owner of the Brooklyn Bowl, Peter Shapiro, and Amy Striem, a certified Early Childhood and Elementary teacher, The Rock and RollPlayhouse uses music to educate children and explore their creativity.
The idea for The Playhouse came to Shapiro, a parent of two young children, after he discovered first-hand a lack of regular programming in New York City that combined his passion for live music and his family. He collaborated with Striem, then an administrator at his daughter’s nursery school, to help fill this void that they felt many other parents also shared. Using the music of the most iconic musicians in rock history, from The Grateful Dead to Prince to David Bowie to Aretha Franklin to The Beatles and more.
The Rock and RollPlayhouse offers its core audience of children under 10 with games, movement, and stories and an opportunity to rock out.
I took the kids to a show last year and they loved it… they danced they played… it was really the highlight of the weekend.
